Energy Storage: Lower Tan Tien
Working with energy can be a powerful practice and so nourishing to our bodies, as is working with sexual energy.
During energy practices we can really activate, stimulate and ignite a lot of energy, which can be amazing to use thereafter. The thought process of storing the energy is so you can access it in a slow release mode rather than all at once making you feel so heightened you don’t know what to do with yourself.
When someone has a lot of sexual energy they can overheat a room or feel like that have to dispel it with urgency. Storage can really help to calm, ground and take control of your energy.
In the Taoist tradition there are three Tan Tien’s (pronounced Don Tien). They are located in the middle of your body, vertically in line. They are each energy centres with energetic responsibilities.
The Lower Tan Tien sits below the belly button and is our centre of gravity. It is responsible for our physical energy and this is where our sexual energy lies. The Lower Tan Tien houses Jing energy, which is dense much like ice. Jing can transform into other energies. Jing is material ambitions, action, sexual appetite. You can see Jing naturally in children but we can lose this energy through menstruation, over ejaculation, trauma, tiredness etc. The Taoist believe that this is the centre of the second brain and the source of those “gut feelings”.
The Middle Tan Tien is located at the heart and is responsible for emotional energies. It houses Qi (pronounced Chi) energy with a water like density to it. Jing can be brought up through the body and transformed into Qi providing a strong energy and emotional body.
The Upper Tan Tien is located behind the third eye in the pituitary gland. This is responsible for psychic and spiritual energies and houses Shen energy. Shen is like vapour in density and represents consciousness, presence and your mind. Bringing Jing up to Qi, then transforming it into Shen provides a high level of consciousness. It can form a strong spiritual practice along with refining sexual energy. This energy can then be sent back down to the Lower Tan Tien for further refinement and storage.
Store the energy into the Lower Tan Tien by rubbing under the navel or sending their focus to the area. The direction for women is to circle anti-clockwise to draw in all the energy that has been stimulated (up on the left and down on the right). Then circling clockwise to store the energy for later use in the Lower Tan Tien (up on the right, down on the left). This is the perfect way to end a Jade Egg practice. Men are to do the opposite directions.
Alternatively you can drink your energy that has been created, stimulated and refined and drink them into your cells all throughout your body.
